Step One: "I Can't'
I sometimes think of Step One in terms of quicksand. Someone falls into quicksand and begins to sink. Not quickly, but slowly. At first it might just be the feet that begin to be sucked slowly downward. The person might not even be aware they are in trouble. Then, as the quicksand begins to pull them further down, perhaps it's to their knees now, they realize something is wrong. They begin to struggle. But the more they struggle, the deeper into the quicksand they sink. Unless someone comes to their aid with a stick or a rope and helps them back onto solid ground, they will die.
In my analogy the disease of alcoholism is the quicksand, the solid ground is a Higher Power, the stick or rope are the twelve steps, and the "Someone" is another person in AA.
I cannot help someone trapped in quicksand without using a rope or stick and maintaining my contact with solid ground. Just like I cannot help someone dying of alcoholism without using the steps and maintaining my contact with a Higher Power.
From Page 39 of the Big Book:
"But the actual of potential alcoholic, with hardly and exception, will be ABSOLUTELY UNABLE TO STOP DRINKING ON THE BASIS OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE. This is a point we wish to emphasize and re-emphasize, to smash home upon our readers as it has been revealed to us out of bitter experience."
From Page 43 of the Big Book:
"Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither he nor any other human being can provide such a defense. His defense must come from a Higher Power."
